Ecuador’s two equators more than double a tourist’s fun

QUITO, Ecuador – This may seem confusing, but there are two equators in Ecuador: the fake equator with the real monument and the real equator with the fake science.

Just 14 miles from the capital city of Quito stands La Mitad del Mundo (The Middle of the World). This official equator monument, an obelisk-shaped structure topped by a giant bronze globe, is surrounded by tourist shops and restaurants in a park of sculptured landscaping. Flowerbeds form the letters N and S, each in its respective hemisphere. Read more.
